The Clippers are looking to hire a proven head coach, which is why Brian Shaw might be in the mix but is not likely
to land the job unless he knocks out the interview — which, sources say, has been his downfall in his pursuit of previous openings. Shying away from hiring a first-time coach could be why two other assistant coaches supposedly on the Clippers’ list, Mike Budenholzer and Mike Malone, wasted no time taking other openings (Atlanta and Sacramento, respectively). Two coaches with experience, Nate McMillan and Byron Scott, also should be taken off the list, a source said. That leaves Alvin Gentry and Jeff Van Gundy as the candidates with extensive experience still in the mix.
