The folks at ESPN may be in damage control, but New York Knicks star Jeremy Lin isn’t making a big deal out of the sports network’s use of language condemned as racist in discussing the Asian American player.

After the Knicks’ loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Friday, ESPN’s website published a headline with the phrase “chink in the armor.” The network pulled down the headline and apologized before firing the headline writer and suspending an ESPN television anchor who used the same phrase on the air.

Lin, however, told reporters Sunday that ESPN apologized to him and that he doesn’t care anymore that it happened.

“Have to learn to forgive, and I don’t even think that was intentional,” he said. “Or hopefully not.”

In a statement, ESPN apologized for the “offensive and inappropriate comments.” ESPNews anchor Max Bretos, who was suspended 30 days for saying the phrase on air, apologized on Twitter.

“My wife is Asian, would never intentionally say anything to disrespect her and that community,” Bretos said. “Despite intention, phrase was inappropriate in this context.”

Lin is the first American-born player of Chinese or Taiwanese descent to play in the NBA. He scored 28 points in the Knicks’ 104-97 victory Sunday and has played a leading role in New York’s eight victories in its last nine games.

J.R.Smith is set to return from China this week!!!

After spending the last few months playing in the Chinese Basketball Association, it appears J.R. Smith is heading back to the states.

Smith wrote Saturday on his Twitter account at TheRealJRSmith that he would be returning to the United States on Wednesday. That would make the unrestricted free agent available for any number of teams to sign.

He signed to play for the Zhejiang Wanma Cyclones during the NBA lockout, inking a deal worth a reported $3 million in September. But since he didn’t have an opt-out in his deal, he had to play until Zhejiang’s season ended.

Asia-Basketeball.com reports that Smith is averaging 35.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 29 games while in China. Zhejiang has been mathematically eliminated from the CBA playoffs, according to Sportando.net.

According to CBSSports.com, Smith’s Twitter profile lists the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Orlando Magic and Indiana Pacers. The Knicks are considered the favorites to sign Smith.

The smile on Kenyon Martin‘s face said a lot.

Martin had just joined the Clippers for practice Sunday in Orlando — he didn’t take part in the session, however — two days after he signed a contract to play for team.

Both Martin and Coach Vinny Del Negro said there is no timetable for him to play in a game, but Martin said he’d like to be in uniform playing before the team finishes a six-game, 10-day trip that continues Monday night against the Orlando Magic.

The Clippers won Martin’s services over the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks.

“The Clippers were a good makeup of a team before I got here,” Martin said. “They were old and young. I’m about winning. I’m about winning basketball games. And I felt the best chance to help was here.”

Martin felt as if he could provide Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan with a veteran’s knowledge of how to be a successful big man.

Martin averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds with the Denver Nuggets last season in 48 games, but he averaged 13.5 points and 7.2 rebounds over his 11-year NBA career in New Jersey and Denver.

“With my knowledge of the game, I know I can help Blake,” Martin said. “I’ve been where Blake is — a whole lot of athleticism and not really knowing how to play. He’s getting it, but I think me being here, being around and talking to him and DeAndre, I think it’s going to help a lot.”

Martin recently played for the Xinjiang Tigers in China before he left the team in December.

Martin said he hopes to play in a game before the Clippers play at Dallas next Monday. Martin has family and friends in Dallas.

Ongoing attempt to improve

The Clippers will continue to search for ways to improve their team by looking at the best available free agents, and J.R. Smith will be considered one of the best for NBA teams when he becomes available after his team in the Chinese Basketball Assn. finishes its season.

The New York Knicks might have a big advantage in landing Smith because of the possibility he could be a starter for them and make more money, according to two people with knowledge of the situation who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The Clippers don’t have the mini mid-level exception because they used it on Martin.

But the Clippers have two trade exceptions from the deal that sent Eric Gordon and Al-Farouq Aminu to New Orleans for Chris Paul. One is for $3.8 million and the other is for $2.7 million, but the Clippers aren’t inclined to use them, meaning they probably will be out of the running for Smith.

The Clippers also could use the veteran’s minimum of $1.2 million to sign a free agent.

Under the collective bargaining agreement, Smith isn’t allowed to return to the NBA until his Zhejiang Golden Bulls team’s season is over. and that might not be until after the NBA All-Star break this month.

J.J. Barea excited about bittersweet night

DALLAS — J.J. Barea appreciates the Mavericks scheduling the ring ceremony for his trip to the American Airlines Center. He’s excited to finally get his championship jewelry and visit with old friends.

But it will be a bittersweet experience for the former Mavs fan favorite, who desperately wanted to continue his career in Dallas.

Mavs owner Mark Cuban, who was determined to create as much salary cap space as possible, forced Barea to make a no-brainer business decision. Barea, who was offered only a one-year deal from the Mavs, signed with the Timberwolves for $19 million over four years.

“Things happen,” Barea said. “I’m a little disappointed it went that way. But to get to come here and get the ring with everybody and the fans, it will be nice.”

Barea won’t play against the Mavericks. He’ll miss his fourth consecutive game due to nagging ankle and hamstring injuries, which makes it more of a social visit for him.

“I’m excited to be here, excited to finally get that ring,” Barea said. “I’m just going to enjoy tonight. I wish I was playing, but now I get to talk more and say hi to everybody.”

After the Timberwolves finished their shootaround, Barea headed for the home locker room to say hello to former teammates and coaches, although some of the Mavs weren’t too interested in socializing.

“I just seen him as we walked by, so that was good enough for me,” Jason Terry said. “Now that he’s on the other team, that was good enough for me. A little 20, 30 seconds, how you doing, how’s the family doing and we’re ready to kick their butt tonight.”

UPDATE: The championship ring isn’t the only gift Barea is getting from the Mavs in his return.

A high chair and baby rattle was waiting for Barea in the visitors’ locker room when the Timberwolves arrived at the arena Wednesday evening. Barea can make good use of the items, as his former Miss Universe girlfriend is expecting, but it’s also an old inside joke.

Clipper Darrell, the somewhat famous, extremely vocal fan of L.A’s red-and-blue franchise, often referred to Barea as a baby while heckling the Mavs. It started a couple of seasons ago when Barea was shooting free throws during a lopsided Mavs win. Clipper Darrell shouted in the quiet, half-empty Staples Center, “Get that baby off the court!” The Mavs on the bench, led by Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry, laughed so hard that they almost rolled on the floor.

“Old jokes,” Barea said.
